She really didn't want to get pulled into this, but they didn't give her a choice. Now she must fight for them or the hope for the return becomes nigh.
Mia is almost achieving her dream of going away to college. To make a difference in Africa by volunteering. She has had a crush on a boy for ages, but he doesn't see her as anything else as a friend. Wanting to escape all this has Mia counting the days for her departure. But her departure comes a bit earlier, and not the way she expected it to. Finding herself in the middle of the woods after having a head-splitting headache at a friends party, has Mia question her sanity, and the sanity of those who won't let her leave.
Chosen serves more as an introduction to the new series The Last Guardian. It tells the beginning of the journey of a seventeen-year-old girl Mia, who is chosen for the role of Guardian in Nethea. She struggles a lot at the beginning of her training, adamantly believing that what the people around her are telling is a big fat lie.
The reader doesn't get too in-depth descriptions about the characters. Instead, a shallow overall look is given. It doesn't affect too much the reading experience since the book is heavy on the world building and Nethea's history lessons. There is a lot to keep up with those two alone. What I missed from time to time was the absence of Vander, the mysterious boy that finds Mia in the woods and then is ordered to stay out of sight completely. There are a few scenes from Vander's point of view which give a lot of insight to the other side of the plot. A few more would have brought some much-needed insider's information about the everyday lives of the Nethean people.
The plot is not the most eventful one. It keeps advancing at a steady pace throughout the book detailing Mia's training process and the history of Nethea. The anticipation for the action, for Mia's progress in training, for the first meeting of some characters', is what kept me reading.
Mia's story is surprisingly quick to read for a four-hundred-page book. I flew through it in just a few hours! The writing will keep you engaged and the anticipation for what to come only accelerates your reading speed.
